Get the look of Taylor Swift's TTPD Lyrics Dress

Updated: Jul 18

But even better maybe?? 🖋️👗

Since Taylor Swift debuted the "Tortured Poets Department" look for her Eras tour, I've been flooded with messages and requests regarding this dress:

Taylor Swift wearing a white dress with words written on it in script font

It's a custom Vivienne Westwood gown with the words “I love you, it’s ruining my life” printed over and over on the skirt--the most famous lyric from the new album's single "Fortnight" featuring Post Malone.

People are loving this look. Understandably so! A dress with written words on it is a way to wear something that's:

  • Classy and elegant

  • Creative and unique

  • Customized

  • And most important--personally meaningful.

Here's the thing: you don't have to be Taylor Swift or have her lyrics dress to get an outfit that represents you! I'm a big fan of empowering yourself to become your own celebrity. Aaaand to be completely honest with no shade intended to Taylor... I think you can do a whole lot better than just wearing the same single line from one song over and over (there I said it). It's a great line, but maybe you want to say something more, and maybe you want to say something for YOU.

Here are a few examples of text you could have written on your own custom piece of clothing (because how cool is it to be able to WEAR what you care about?) Which one feels the most inspiring to you?

1.

The text: Special dates

The idea: Tell the story of a relationship through a list of important dates on your clothing item. Met > started dating > engaged > married > births of child(ren)...what else could you throw in that's unique to your story?

2.

The text: Locations

The idea: Have you moved around a lot? List the latitude and longitude coordinates of places you've lived on your piece. By wearing them, the places closest to your heart can be carried with you wherever you go. You can also do this with addresses, names of cities, or subway stops.

3.

The text: Historical documents

The idea: Law student? Have the US Constitution written on your graduation outfit--or party outfit for when you pass the bar (or both)!

4.

The text: Famous quotes

The idea: Become the belle of your book club when you arrive dressed in a piece featuring your favorite Jane Austen quote written in gorgeous script.

5.

The text: Names

The idea: Try a new, creative take on a family tree or ancestor portrait gallery wall by covering your clothing item in the names of family members (you can even include pets)!

6.

The text: A coded or hidden message

The idea: A few years ago, I was asked to paint a secret message into a couple's wedding wear. A romantic phrase meaningful to them was stealthily hidden amongst their wedding flowers in the design. What message would you want to sneak onto a garment, for yourself or as a gift? Want it to be even more secret? Have it written in code (like Morse code).

7.

The text: Inspirational message

The idea: Do you have a mantra, word of the year, or favorite positive affirmation? Get a little extra motivation and confidence boost every time you wear that phrase on your clothes! Spread that love with the world, or take a note from the idea above and hide it within another design if you want the message to be only for you.
