The Backstory
It was spooky season 2014, and I was thinking of what I wanted to dress up as. Halloween has always been a favorite holiday of mine because it's such a great time to be creative!
I decided to be the painting Starry Night by Van Gogh. There was only one problem...I couldn't find anything to buy online that was remotely up to my standards for a good costume. Every clothing item I saw with that painting on it was either poor quality print or fabric, didn't show the whole painting, or was a bad knock-off version of Starry Night.
Maybe I'm picky? But this was just not doing it for me.
With about a month to go and nothing helpful coming up in search results, it was time to think of a different plan. It suddenly occurred to me that, hey! I was an artist! In fact, a few years before I had actually done a re-creation of an impressionist painting as a fun joint project with my Grandma. Could I not put those skills to use on a clothing item?

The Starry Night Dress
Happily, the answer was yes. I remembered seeing some fabric paint at the local art supply store that seemed promising for this endeavor; I bought a white dress, and spent the rest of the month giving my best attempt at being a fashion-forward Van Gogh in my spare time.
Fun fact: I still use the same brand of fabric paint.
Halloween arrived, and I had an amazing time dressing up as always! But even more, I had really loved the process of making my piece. I was already considering doing similar projects for future Halloweens because of how much fun I had.
The one thing I wasn't prepared for was the response to the costume! Over and over, I was met with "wait, you painted that??" and "...could you do something like that for me?"
Halloween night 2014
It didn't end that night: when I wore the Starry Night dress other places and times over the next few years, I had similar reactions. People would even stop me on the street! The more interest it got, the more I slowly came to realize that custom painting on clothes was a unique service that I could do for others, maybe even as a full-time career.
I got my first client in 2015, and have little by little developed that experience into the (still-evolving) business that it is today!
My first client wanted the Starry Night look on a formal jacket. Though Van Gogh was my origin story, I now specialize in creating original, one-of-a-kind designs.
I absolutely love using fashion and art as a way to help others see their personalities and passions shine through in their outfits. Each clothing item has an opportunity to be as unique as the person's story that it's a part of...and as me 10 years ago discovered, that feeling of being seen in exactly the way you want is priceless.
Happy Halloween to you,
Kendra
